What can you expect from your first eye exam?

Your first visit to Eye Care Queensland is a comprehensive evaluation that will take about one and a half hours. Your visit may take longer if you need specialised testing or have complex eye problems.

What do I need to bring on my first visit?

Things that would be helpful to bring include your medicare card, medication list, a driver, and any insurance information and cards. If you have had previous eye surgeries, please attempt to bring prior records.

Will I be able to drive home?

Drops may be used to dilate your pupils during your consultation. These drops will blur your eyes, affecting your near vision. It may take approximately two hours for your vision to return to normal. We suggest you avoid driving during this time and recommend you have someone drive you home, or take public transport. Sunglasses will help to minimise the glare caused by dilated pupils.

I am uninsured, can I still see a ophthalmologist?

Eye Care Queensland is always happy to see uninsured patients. For your peace-of-mind, our practices provide a full and open estimate of fees before any procedure. There are numerous treatment options for people without health insurance including outpatient surgery. Dr Rowan Porter has access to intermediate surgery through the Prince Charles Hospital which is an excellent and very affordable option to access consultant sub-specialist eye surgery without insurance.
